Dye Sublimation on Aluminum

These metal prints are not only visually captivating but are also built to last. The aluminum surface is highly durable and resistant to fading, ensuring that your print will maintain its beauty for years. Whether exposed to sunlight or displayed in a high-traffic area, these prints retain their color and integrity without the wear typical of paper or canvas prints.

The Process

The image is first printed in reverse onto transfer paper using specially formulated dyes and inkjet technology. This paper is then placed onto a pre-treated aluminum sheet. The assembly is transferred into a heat press, where temperatures reach between 350-400 degrees. Under the intense heat and pressure, the dyes from the transfer paper transform into gas, penetrate the metal’s surface, and solidify within the treated aluminum. This is the stage where the sublimation heat transfer takes place, typically taking 3-10 minutes per press. Once removed from the heat press, the aluminum cools, completing the process. No additional coatings or laminates are applied afterward. As the dyes cool, they are permanently embedded beneath the surface of the aluminum.

Inset Backing

An inset backing is a mounting option for dye sublimation aluminum prints where a frame is attached to the back of the print. Made of aluminum, this "frameless" mount is designed to be concealed from view when the artwork is displayed. The term "inset" refers to the backing being recessed or positioned inside the edges of the print, keeping it out of sight from the front or sides. This method ensures the artwork remains the focal point while offering the required support and hanging mechanism from the back. It enhances the print's strength and rigidity, helping to prevent warping or bending over time. While aluminum prints are durable and resistant to the elements, larger prints particularly benefit from the added support offered by an inset backing. The aluminum inset backing features a built-in track system that accommodates cleats, screws, or hangers for easy hanging.
